California battery incentives can reduce the cost of backup power and solar self-consumption, but “there is a rebate” is not the same as “your project has a reserved incentive.” In 2026, homeowners should distinguish between statewide income-qualified programs, utility-specific backup support, portable power rebates and ordinary contractor discounts.
SGIP: California’s main storage incentive framework
The CPUC’s Self-Generation Incentive Program supports qualifying energy-storage projects. Its Residential Solar and Storage Equity incentive is designed for eligible low-income residential customers installing paired solar and battery storage. The CPUC says reservations opened statewide in 2025, and LADWP directs qualifying customers to its SGIP program information.
Eligibility can depend on household income, utility service, location, housing status and other program rules. Funds are limited and are generally administered through approved program processes. A contractor’s verbal statement is not a reservation.
Questions to answer before counting SGIP savings
- Which specific SGIP budget or equity category is being used?
- Who is the program administrator for my utility territory?
- Has my eligibility been documented?
- Has an incentive reservation been submitted or approved?
- Who receives the incentive payment: me, the installer, a third-party owner, or a financing company?
- Does the contract remain valid if the incentive is reduced, delayed or denied?
- Are there ownership, operating, inspection or data-sharing requirements?
Get every answer in writing. If the project only works financially when an uncertain rebate is included, run a second calculation without it.
SCE portable backup-power support
SCE currently advertises up to a $200 rebate on qualifying portable power stations for eligible customers in areas affected by Public Safety Power Shutoffs. A portable station can support phones, a router, laptops, lighting or selected medical devices, but it is not equivalent to a permanently installed whole-home battery.
SCE also describes a Critical Care Backup Battery program for eligible customers who depend on medical equipment. Eligibility and device requirements matter, so contact SCE directly rather than buying equipment based on a summary.

Federal tax-credit warning for 2026
The former homeowner Residential Clean Energy Credit expired for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 under current federal law. A residential battery quote for a 2026 installation should not automatically subtract the former 30% homeowner credit.

How to compare battery quotes after incentives
- Start with the total cash price before any rebate, tax assumption or financing.
- Compare usable capacity, continuous output and surge output.
- Identify exactly which circuits will run during an outage.
- Check black-start capability, solar recharging during an outage and transfer-equipment limits.
- Read the battery warranty for term, throughput, retained capacity and exclusions.
- Compare the financed total, not only the monthly payment.
- Ask whether incentive proceeds reduce principal automatically or are retained by another party.
