Safety: Panel-mounted monitors involve service-panel work. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use a qualified electrician when required or whenever you are not trained and comfortable working around energized equipment.
How the main types differ
Circuit-level monitoring
Current transformers attach to the service mains and, on multi-channel models, selected branch circuits. This gives direct measurements tied to breakers, making it easier to separate HVAC, water heating, kitchen loads, EV charging, and solar. The tradeoff is a more involved installation and a busier panel.
Signature-based detection
Some whole-home monitors look for electrical patterns associated with devices. This can produce a clean experience with fewer sensors, but recognition is probabilistic. Treat appliance labels as useful clues, then confirm important findings with a direct test or plug-level meter.
Plug-level monitoring
A smart plug with energy measurement is often the best first purchase when the question is narrow: “How much does this freezer, dehumidifier, office setup, or entertainment center use?” Confirm the plug’s current rating and never use it for equipment the manufacturer excludes.

- Panel and service compatibility: confirm service type, number of phases, available space, sensor count, and conductor size.
